How Clean is Bioheat® Fuel?

Bioheat is eco-friendly and good for your heating system

bioheatThese days, we are all concerned about the effects of climate change, and New York families want to be part of the solution. Many homeowners with oil-fired furnaces and boilers wonder if their home heating contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

At Burt’s Reliable, we deliver Bioheat fuel with a B20 blend, meaning that our heating oil contains 20% organic biodiesel. This is not your grandparents’ heating oil. It’s cleaner, more efficient, and better for your heating system.

Here are a few reasons you should be proud to heat your North Fork home with Bioheat fuel.

Bioheat fuel is sustainably produced

Unlike some other “green technologies,” Bioheat fuel is on the market and making a difference today. Even better, the process for making it is sustainable. Bioheat fuel blends biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur heating oil.

Biodiesel is a gallon-for-gallon substitute for petroleum-based fuel that is non-toxic, biodegradable, renewable, and clean-burning. The biodiesel we use comes from organic and recycled products:

  • soybean oil
  • used cooking oils
  • inedible corn oil
  • canola
  • tallow
  • fats
  • algae

Importantly, these oils and fats listed are byproducts of producing food, so no food is sacrificed to make our fuel. We blend our Bioheat fuel with 20% biodiesel. Our competitors use much lower blends.

Bioheat fuel is cleaner than natural gas

Bioheat fuel is the common-sense choice for contemporary homes, and it’s also much cleaner than natural gas. Recent studies have shown that Bioheat fuel blends of 2% or more produce lower greenhouse-gas emissions than natural gas when evaluated over 20 years.

A big part of the reason for this is biodiesel. It reduces carbon 100%, unlike natural gas, which releases 100% of carbon from the ground into the atmosphere. The combustion of biofuels actually recycles carbon-dioxide emissions through renewable plant materials and other biomass feedstocks.

The use of Bioheat in the Northeast prevents over 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. That’s like making 180,000 homes carbon neutral! And researchers are on track to have 100% carbon-neutral Bioheat fuel by 2050.

Bioheat fuel is great for your boiler or furnace

You don’t need any special equipment to use Bioheat fuel. It works in existing home heating systems, and it actually can improve your boiler or furnace’s efficiency since it burns cleaner, leaving fewer deposits behind.

What does this mean for your home? Only good things! Fewer deposits reduce wear and tear on your system. Your efficient system will burn less fuel and have a longer life expectancy.

Bioheat in New York

As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Bioheat, here’s one more for New York residents.

With the goal of reducing emissions, New York offers residents a tax incentive to heat their homes with renewable energy.

The NY State Clean Fuel Credit is determined by the amount of Bioheat fuel you purchase in a year. You receive $.01 per gallon for every percentage point of biodiesel in your Bioheat heating oil blend. For Burt’s Reliable’s B20 blend heating oil, this translates to a $0.20 tax credit for each gallon of heating oil purchased in 2021.

On average, this saves customers $150 per year. Not too shabby!

At the start of each year, we provide customers with an annual usage statement to apply for their credit.
