Fuel Oil Storage tank

With a heating oil storage tank on your property, you have the peace of mind that comes with an independent home fuel supply.

But you also need to keep an eye on your tank, especially if it’s getting up in years. Heating oil tanks have a long lifespan, but if your tank is more than 30 years old, we strongly recommend that you replace it. Whether you have oil storage in your basement or buried underground on your Long Island property, the professionals at Burt’s Reliable can handle your oil tank removal and get a new, state-of-the-art replacement installed safely in one day.

Oil Tank Replacement Cost in North Fork, Long Island

The expense of replacing your home’s oil tank can vary greatly depending on many factors, like:

  • the age and condition of your current tank
  • what kind of tank you’re installing
  • additional piping needed
  • permit costs
  • remediation and abandonment costs for underground tanks

The cost can run to several thousand dollars — luckily, you only have to do it once every 20 to 30 years!

But every project is different, and the team at Burt’s Reliable can perform a no-fee estimate for you.

Remember that the cost of not replacing your tank in time could be astronomical. If your tank leaks because of corrosion or damage, you could be on the hook for $20,000 or more in property cleaning and repairs.

Heating Oil Tank Installation and Removal Process

The Burt’s team has been taking care of oil-powered homes since 1917. In over a century of service and multiple generations, we’ve got the process down to a science. Any interruption in your fuel will only last a few hours.

If the oil tank we’re replacing is in your basement, we pump any remaining oil to a temporary tank. Once the new tank is in place, we’ll return the fuel. Our team then gets to work cutting up the old tank and hauling it away. Per New York regulations, we will clean the old tank thoroughly before disposing of it.

With a buried tank, we will first install your new storage and transfer all remaining heating oil from the old tank. In accordance with Suffolk County Health Department, we’ll fill the old buried tank with either sand or an approved foam.

We pay attention to fuel tank regulations, so you don’t need to. That said, here are answers to common questions about oil tank removal and installation:

Q: Do I need to register my tank?
A: You don’t need to register a heating oil tank with a volume of fewer than 1,100 gallons as long as it isn’t located in a Groundwater Management Zone or Water Supply Sensitive Area.

Q: Do I need to remove my old underground tank?
A: As long as the tank isn’t leaking, you shouldn’t need to remove it.

Q: Are there any rules governing the kind of tank I install?
A: As with everything in this state, there are regulations about walling and materials. We’ll ensure that you’re in compliance.

Q: Do I need to test my tank?
A: Unless there is a specific issue or event where you need test data, you probably don’t need to test your tank regularly.

Heating Oil Tank Sizes and Models

If you think it’s time to replace your tank, you’ll be happy to know that today’s tanks are light-years ahead of the old models. They’re corrosion-proof, and many feature double-wall construction that makes them even tougher than their predecessors. We highly recommend the Granby Ecogard aboveground tank, which is virtually leak-proof, with warranties of up to 25 years.
