Q. How long does a central air conditioner last?
A. If your A/C is maintained correctly, it can last 10 to 12 years.
Q. Why isn’t my A/C producing cool air?
A. There are several potential reasons, including:
- Airflow is obstructed because of clogged ductwork or filters.
- Your evaporator coil needs to be cleaned.
- Your thermostat or blower fans are malfunctioning.
- You are low on refrigerant.

Q. When does it make more sense to replace my A/C equipment instead of repairing it?
A. Here are three times it makes more sense to replace your cooling system than to repair it:
- It’s more than 10 years old and consistently not keeping you comfortable.
- The necessary repairs would cost more than 50% of the cost of new equipment.
- Your system is outdated, meaning it has a low-efficiency rating or uses discontinued (and quite expensive) R-22 refrigerant.
Understanding air conditioning efficiency ratings
The energy efficiency of a cooling system is measured through its Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). This rating is like miles-per-gallon on your car. It tells you how much cool comfort you’ll get from the electricity you use. The higher the SEER rating, the better the cooling efficiency.
Effective January 1, 2023, all A/C equipment sold and installed in the U.S. must have a minimum rating of 15 SEER. This is a good rating for most home systems. However, we often recommend that people who run their A/C all day opt for a 16 SEER system.
